CHAPTER EIGHT
D.U.M.B.
Two and a half hours of being jostled about in the back of the trucks, was beginning to take its toll, when suddenly the convoy finally turned left onto a track that led into deep woodland.
Sensing the turn Joe said, âIt feels like weâre off the main road.â
A soldier at the rear of the truck looked out and confirmed this to be the case and as the track narrowed they could hear branches rubbing and scraping along the sides. Everyone started to get fidgety and apprehensive with anticipation, realising that they must be close now. A further twenty minutes went by until eventually the convoy ground to a halt.
General Jackson, riding at the front in his RSOV jeep, marshalled the troops and called for silence. He surveyed the area squinting in the darkness to make sense of the terrain. Eventually he found what he was looking for: a line of trees that looked too uniform to be natural. As he made his way through them he motioned for the rest of his men to follow. About fifty feet through the other side of the tree line, a pair of huge steel doors came into view, built into a rock face. Jackson walked straight up to a box to the side and slightly proud of the wall. He lifted a small flap to reveal a keypad and entered a six digit number. A panel automatically slid open. Then a piece of apparatus moved mechanically into position. Jackson wasted no time: he placed his right eye against the eyepiece and paused.
A few seconds later the apparatus responded with, âRetinal recognition confirmed â Access granted â Welcome General Jackson.â
With that the hefty steel doors slowly swung inwards to reveal a massive ovoid tunnel that led deep into the ground at a slight slope.
Half of the company were left outside to stand guard whilst Jackson led the rest into the tunnel. As they moved forwards lights came on in front of them automatically to illuminate the way. Alice was astounded, how could such a massive construction exist and for no one to know anything about it. Jackson stopped to address his men,
âOkay, listen up. About two hundred yards down here on the left is a platform that will take us down several levels. Letâs get to it quickly.â
On reaching this point Jackson opened the door and twenty-five of the fifty men stepped in. Alice being one of them noticed that the floor levels indicated on the control panel went down to level twelve. Jackson pressed the button for level seven and the platform began to slowly descend. At level seven the platform stopped and everyone stepped out. Jackson led them to a large room. It was empty but for several trollies and another keypad on one wall. Putting in yet another code Jackson stepped back to allow the door to slide open and reveal what appeared to be another wall. At four feet from the ground on this second wall was a line of equally spaced wheels painted red.
